For a special treat, usually toward the end of my vacation, you might like to stay in a historic castle or manor house. A top choice is Ruthin Castle, in North Wales (but still less than 50 miles from the Manchester, England international airport). It is an authentic castle, built in the 10th century, and comes complete with a whipping pit, drowning pool, dungeon and a resident ghost.
Wales is rich in history and spectacular scenery. There are walking trails, mountain biking trails, and fantastic beaches and coastal preserves, in addition to castles, forts and ruins - well over 150 ancient and historic sites throughout the country - that literally bring history alive. Purchasing a British Heritage Pass before arriving in Wales provides access to many of the most popular historic attractions.
Although everyone speaks English, Welsh is frequently the language of choice. Signs are typically posted in both languages. Rugby, however, is a universal language and often-proclaimed the national sport in Wales (cricket and football vie for the most-popular title). If you can include a rugby game in Millennium Stadium in Cardiff in your Wales vacation packages, you’ll be able to feel the passion of country - combined with its scenery and history, Wales will surely be added to your list of favorite destinations.
