Day Tours of Scotland
Discover Scotland’s haunted history on day tours of Scotland. With a rich history dating back to the Neolithic Age, a day trip to haunted locations will liven up your Scotland vacation packages with mysterious places, legends and scary tales. Perhaps you’ll even see or hear a ghost!
Near the border with England, you can begin your tour of haunted locations with Hermitage Castle, key to controlling the border area during the Scottish and English Wars. The castle’s long history - it was first built in the mid 13th century - is filled with murders, intrigue, torture, and treason. The present day sightings of ghosts, the mysterious happenings and the occasional screams of former owners are attributed to the eerie and oppressive atmosphere of this lonely, dismal spot.
From Hermitage, head west over to the ferry for a short ride to the Isle of Arran and a visit to Brodick Castle, Garden, and Country Park. Sections of the castle date to the 13th century, while the formal gardens were created in the early 1700s. The castle and grounds became a National Trust Property in 1958. During your visit to the castle and grounds, you may encounter one of the ghosts from the castle’s 800 year history.
While on the Isle of Arran, be sure to stop at Machrie Moor, on the western side of the island. The moor contains many remains - hut circles, solitary stones - of early man, but the most impressive is six stone circles concentrated in a small area. One of these has three upright red sandstone pillars, the tallest of which is just over 18 feet high. These stone circles date from the Bronze Age, 1600 - 1300 BC and are surrounded by local folklore and legend.
Crathes Castle and Garden near Aberdeen is a 16th century tower house, allegedly inhabited by two ghosts. Be mindful as you enter the castle - it has a trip step, to deter any attackers who were climbing the staircase. The formal gardens are divided into eight themed areas and date back to the early 1700s. The castle and grounds became part of the National Trust for Scotland in 1951.

Northwest of Aberdeen, you’ll reach Fyvie Castle, where ghosts and legends have been crafted over the castle’s 800 year history. The property became part of the National Trust of Scotland in 1984 and features an extensive collection of portraits, furniture, tapestries, arms and armor. It also has one of the world’s largest private collections of Raeburns, a great stone wheel staircase, and several resident ghosts.
If you’re planning day tours of Scotland to visit these historical properties - or more, consider purchasing a British Heritage Pass before you leave home. The pass is a great deal, especially for extended vacations, and provides access to Britain’s fascinating history through admission to the most significant properties and gardens.
