To reduce the hassle and stress of planning your trip, I’ve prepared a few guidelines and tips on traveling to Ireland:

• The legal drinking age in Ireland is 18, although some  pubs may enforce a policy of serving alcohol only to guests over age 21.  Pubs are open 7 days a week.
• Smoking is not allowed in public areas, including restaurants, pubs and hotels.
• VAT and tax refunds are available to non-European Union residents for purchases of goods (not services) that are leaving the country.  (If you purchase a gift for someone in Ireland, you will not be eligible for a VAT refund).  Be sure to get a tax refund document for your purchases - you may be able to get your refund at the airport when you depart; otherwise you must mail the form to the store.
• You can drive in Ireland with a valid US drivers license - no need for an international drivers license.  Seat belts are required for all passengers (both front and back seats).  Laws on drinking and driving are quite severe - don’t do it!  Car rental companies may have special restrictions on renting to visitors under age 21 or over age 70 - check before you make your reservation if this applies.
• Both travelers over the age of 65 and full-time students may receive a variety of discounts and reduced rates.  Be sure to have valid identification to take advantage of these offers.
