Ireland Family Vacation
One of the best ways to enjoy an Ireland family vacation is to rent a cottage or vacation home for a week or more, or even just a few days. The advantages of choosing Ireland vacation packages with a rental home include:
- ample bedrooms to accommodate everyone comfortably - parents will not have to share a room with children! Several families can share one house for an ideal arrangement for family reunions or get-togethers with friends;
- plenty of space for everyone to be together or find a few moments of solitude;
- cooking and laundry facilities. I know few people dream of a vacation during which they will have to cook every meal and do laundry, but being able to make breakfast and picnic lunches each day will help keep costs down and leave more money for fun activities. Being able to wash clothes conveniently will help reduce the clothing you need to pack and make traveling much easier;
- an outdoor area for barbecuing, picnicking, watching the sunsets and/or playing;
- some upscale rental properties are adjacent to resort hotel complexes and include all the amenities - pool, fitness center, golf course, spa facilities, restaurants, Kid’s Club - of the resort.
- a choice of locations throughout Ireland.
One of my favorite rental cottage properties is near Lahinch in Co. Clare, an easy drive from the Shannon airport. The scenery in this region is particularly unique, especially the limestone landscapes at the Burren - a great area for exploring.
Lahinch is convenient to several good beaches for relaxing days in the sun or an introduction to surfing, with instruction from the Lahinch Surf School. For golfing enthusiasts, the Old Course at Lahinch is said to be one of the best in Ireland.
A visit to Aillwee Cave is a fun day on an Ireland family vacation

Nearby attractions include the Cliffs of Moher and the Aillwee Cave, with the Burren Bird of Prey Centre and several small shops.
While horseback riding and nature walks are great area activities, one of the highlights of this area is the dolphin watch trips based in Carrigaholt. The boat takes you out into the Shannon estuary, where, from April through October, you are able to see dolphin, loads of different sea birds, seals and extremely agile mountain goats. The 4-hour trip with interesting commentaries on the local wildlife provided by the onboard naturalists is a fantastic experience.
Conveniently located near shops and friendly Irish pubs and restaurants - for dining out frequently! - renting a cottage in Lahinch provides an ideal base for an affordable Ireland family vacation.
