A Trip to Ireland
A trip to Ireland is a magical experience, with the first thing that takes away your breath the discovery of how green the landscapes are. The richly colored lawns that spread out like velvet seem almost artificial, and the last drops of a light rain on the leaves of roadside hedges sparkle like precious gems.
Often when visitors plan their trips to Ireland, they look at a map, calculate distances, and think they will be able to drive all over the island in just a couple of days. Even allowing time for seeing the sites, how on earth would anyone be able to fill two weeks of vacation?
As it turns out, once you arrive - easily. In fact, you may not get to nearly all the places you’ve planned. Partly the roads will slow your travel. There is no real system of high-speed motorways to zip across the island. But even more than that, around every corner will be yet another narrow lane beckoning you to explore lush countryside dotted with small villages and picturesque stone cottages. The memory cards on your cameras will fill up rapidly.
Everywhere there will be another temptation causing you to linger. For example, on your first day out of Dublin you might stop at the Irish National Stud and find that two new foals had been born just hours before. How could you rush away from that? And if at night you stay at Glendalough with views of the ruins from your window, it will seem only natural to dally over coffee in the morning.

And so it goes. You might not want to kiss the Blarney Stone (especially if you have plenty of Blarney as it is), but you will want to wander around the area. If the Ring of Kerry isn’t enough for you, you’ll have to drive around the Dingle Peninsula, too. And don’t forget the Cliffs of Moher, the Rock of Cashel, and Newgrange, which will be an unexpected marvel.
With just the major sites, you might manage most of what you have planned for your Ireland vacation package, but you’ll discover that the Irish people are so incredibly friendly. Checking out of your Bed & Breakfast may add an hour every morning just for chatting. Stopping at a shop to look for postcards is likely as not to involve you in a lengthy political discussion. Lingering, it seems, is an Irish national pastime.
No matter. If you don’t see everything on your vacation, that just means you’ll have to plan another trip to Ireland in the future.
