Dublin Day Tours

Dublin day tours are a way to see some of the Irish countryside and historical sites near the city and still have the convenience of staying in the same hotel for a few days.  Dublin is a vibrant city where it’s fun to explore  - but it’s also good to see more of the region without the hassle of having to drive.

I found two day tours priced under $50 per person to get you out of the city and see some sights.  The first is a 3 1/2 hour escorted tour to view Dublin Bay and visit the Castle of Malahide, dating back to the 14th century.  A tour of the castle includes a walk through wonderful period gardens in addition to viewing the castle’s interior for examples of Irish furniture and famous portraits from the National Art Gallery.

The tour continues to the award winning village of Malahide, and then follows the coastline to the fishing village of Howth for views of Dublin Bay. As the motor coach passes through the countryside and villages, the guide provides entertaining insight into the local lore and legends before returning you to the city.

History buffs will enjoy my second choice of Dublin day tours - a full day tour to Newgrange, the site of the Battle of the Boyne and Mellifont Abbey.

You’ll be able to experience a taste of the ghosts of Ireland’s past at one of the country’s most important and historic locations, the Boyne Valley. One of the more exciting stops on this tour is into the actual tomb of Newgrange -  the oldest and largest Neolithic burial chamber in Europe.  This tomb predates the Egyptian pyramids!

After a stop at the site of the famous Battle of the Boyne, you’ll visit the ruins of Mellifont Abbey, Ireland’s first Cistercian Monastery, consecrated in 1157.   The remains of the unusual octagonal Lavabo, where the monks washed their hands before meals,  will give you a sense of the fine craftsmanship in the building’s construction.
