Day Trips from Dublin

When you are vacationing in Ireland’s capital city, you will be able to see more of the country by venturing out on a few day trips from Dublin.  If you do not want to bother with renting a car, an escorted coach tour is a good choice.

Several tours include a train ride to a different region, with an escorted tour at the destination. These include:

  • traveling to Cork by rail meet your guide and touring the Blarney Castle - with a chance to kiss the stone! - then visiting the “Queenstown Story” Heritage Centre in Cobh before the return train to Dublin;
  • traveling to Galway, on the west coast, by train with a motor coach tour through the magnificent scenery of the Connemara, to the village of Leenane  to view Ireland’s only fjord. A visit to the Kylemore Abbey Visitor Centre and Victorian Garden is included, with a drive through the Inagh mountain ranges before returning to Dublin by train.

For a spectacularly scenic drive through the countryside, a tour through the Wicklow Gap to the Blessington Lakes is an excellent choice. This tour also visits the Avoca Handweavers, reputed to have the oldest weaving mill in Ireland, and their craft shop in the quaint village of Avoca.  The tour continues on to Glendalough, the ”Glen of the two lakes,” one of the most beautiful settings in all of Ireland before returning to Dublin.

Another full day tour from Dublin concentrates on Irish history, with stops at the tomb of Newgrange, the oldest and largest Neolithic burial chamber in Europe;  the site of the famous 1690 Battle of the Boyne; and the ruins of Mellifont Abbey, before returning to Dublin.

If you would rather explore on your own, try more unconventional day trips from Dublin and take the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) to Killiney Bay.  The train stops at the Court Hotel - stroll up the driveway for awesome views of the Bay and a wander through the gardens, and perhaps, enjoy morning or afternoon tea in this renovated former Victorian mansion.

Killiney is a fantastic seaside town that is famous not only for its residents (such as Enya, Bono, and Sinaed O’Connor), but also for its long stretch of beach and the natural beauty of the area.  A walk through the area, on the way to Killiney Hill, will reveal some of the finest homes in Ireland.

From the Hill, on a clear day, you will have an awesome view over Sorrento Bay to the distant mountains in Wicklow.  Take the walking path from Killiney Hill to Dalkey, where you can catch the DART for the return ride to Dublin.

Whether you prefer an escorted coach tour, an independent adventure, or a private guide as a chauffeur to explore the countryside, with day trips from Dublin you can visit many of the great sites in Ireland.
